Globe Cambridge School has launched its newest co-curricular initiative, the ORCA x Esports Team, introducing a structured environment for students interested in gaming, digital strategy, and the broader world of competitive esports.
The idea for the team began earlier this term, when teachers observed that several students were consistently engaging in conversations around game strategy, design mechanics, and competitive play. Recognizing the growing relevance of esports as both a global industry and an emerging academic pathway, faculty members began exploring how the school could support students with genuine interest in this field.
The inaugural gathering took place in the Learning Commons. Students met to discuss the formation of the ORCA x Esports roster, review the types of games the team will focus on this year, and outline practice expectations. Selections include a mix of team-based and strategy-centered titles, chosen not only for competition potential but also for the emphasis they place on coordination, decision-making, and analytical thinking.
Faculty advisors introduced students to the framework behind the program. Weekly sessions will include structured practice blocks, teamwork drills, and opportunities to review gameplay footage for improvement. As the program evolves, plans include inviting guest speakers with experience in game development, collegiate esports, and technology-related career paths to help students understand the professional landscape surrounding gaming.
A central purpose of the ORCA x Esports initiative is to help students see gaming not only as a recreational activity but also as a field with legitimate future possibilities. Discussions during the launch meeting touched on roles within the esports ecosystem—ranging from game design and software engineering to event production, broadcasting, digital art, and team analytics. Several students noted that this was the first time they had seen gaming presented as a potential academic or career direction.
Students also shared their personal motivations for joining the team, from improving strategic decision-making to learning how organized competitive play differs from casual gaming. Many expressed appreciation for having a school-based setting where their interest could be explored constructively and collaboratively.
Over the next few weeks, the team will begin internal scrimmages, followed by friendly match opportunities with local partner schools. The ORCA x Esports Team will also collaborate on developing team branding, match documentation, and communication protocols as they prepare for their first formal competitions later this year.
